Dr. DeArmond’s interest in the environment began in the California redwoods. He studied forestry and worked in the redwood forest logging, fighting fires, constructing salmon habitat, building hiking trails and planting trees. After graduating from Humboldt State University in 2004 with a Bachelors in Forestry, he worked for the US Forest Service in Alaska building roads in the Tongass National Forest. After that, he worked in the timber industry in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range for several years preparing timber harvesting documents and overseeing their implementation. In 2015, Dr. DeArmond moved to Manaus, Brazil to continue his education. He received his Masters and Doctorate in tropical forest science after studying the impacts of logging machinery on the environment in the Amazon rainforest. Currently, he teaches a graduate course on forest procurement at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
