Amelia Southern-Uribe, a Colombian American journalist and climate activist is currently pursuing dual degrees in Advertising/Public Relations and political science with a minor in sustainability at the University of Arkansas. Recognized as a Udall Scholar, Amelia’s journey is marked by prestigious awards, including the 2022 City of Fayetteville Environmental Steward, 2023 National Association of Campus Activities’ Best Sustainable Event, and the University of Arkansas’ Family of the Year. Amelia is the Editor In-Chief and Founder of ROOTS magazine, a publication exploring the intersection of art, education, and environmental justice. Their vision is to amplify the narratives of individuals from Southern communities engaged in environmental efforts while closing educational disparities. Amelia’s influence extends beyond environmental advocacy. They serve as Vice President of University Programs, overseeing the documentation of 120 semester events, engaging a campus of 27,000 students. They manage a substantial $400,000 budget and significantly boosted social media engagement by 824 followers (29%) in just one month. Amelia also plays a pivotal role as the Director of the Southeastern chapters for This is Zero Hour, a climate justice organization. Under their guidance, the organization diverted 238,128 pounds of waste while promoting 29+ events and designing 141+ graphics, resulting in a remarkable 125% increase in attendance. Amelia Southern-Uribe’s dedication to environmental education and justice, coupled with their multifaceted leadership, positions them as a Board of Directors.
